21-22 April 2015: Dehradun
Earth Day, held on April 22, is an internationally celebrated event. The original Earth Day, celebrated on April 22, 1970, was set in place by a US senator in order to raise environmental awareness after witnessing the devastation caused by an oil spill. Today, with the increasingly devastating consequences of litter and pollution, Earth day is just as, if not more important as a means to honor the Earth and advocate environmental protection.
Earth day was celebrated at Dehradun Hills Academy to prove and carry forward the task that we are consciously aware of our existence as a thread within the whole web called Nature and not the creators. The events organized were a conscious effort to teach the young minds to develop compassion and mindfulness for all species of life and earnestly pledge to return the habitats back to them which had to bear the bruat of technology and modernization.
The Kindergarten classes begin the day with Earth Day exhibitions. After a month of learning about and practicing recycling, the students presented how to reuse goods and recycle articles. Junior school activities included pledge taking, posters on endangered flora & fauna, story writing, documentaries, ‘Know a plant’,
“It’s really fun to do this. I’ve always had a passion about nature,” Aveejeet said.
“We’re trying to make it fun,” Shalini added. “So (students) get the point but don’t think it’s boring.”
Dehradun Hills Academy has always been at the forefront of organizing such International events in the school and this is partly the reason why the school over the past two decades has been ranked among the Top Ranked Boarding School in Dehradun.
